How to spell BIRTHDAY

8 letters · one silly story · spelled right by the end

Writing "birthday" five times in a row doesn't stick — by Thursday it's gone. What sticks is a picture. Give each letter of BIRTHDAY a character, chain them into one silly story, and your child rebuilds the word from the story every time:

B Bear 🐻 — Let's spell BIRTHDAY! It all starts with a wobbly Bear.

Ask your child: What do we start with?

I Iguana 🦎 — Bear gives an Iguana to a friend.

Ask your child: What does Bear give away?

R Robot 🤖 — Iguana jumps over a Robot!

Ask your child: What does Iguana jump over?

T Tent ⛺ — Robot bakes a Tent for dessert!

Ask your child: What does Robot bake?

H Hamburger 🍔 — Tent discovers Hamburger hiding in a cave.

Ask your child: What is hiding in the cave?

D Donut 🍩 — A Donut sneaks up behind Hamburger!

Ask your child: Who sneaks up behind Hamburger?

A Airplane ✈️ — A Airplane sneaks up behind Donut!

Ask your child: Who sneaks up behind Donut?

Y Yarn 🧶 — And Yarn saves the day!

Ask your child: Who saves the day?

Why this works: each letter becomes a concrete image (dual coding), and retelling the story is retrieval practice — the two most reliable memory effects in learning research. It also turns spelling practice from a fight into a giggle.

Every story is different — regenerate until your child laughs, swap any letter's character, or let the AI write one. Works for any word, including Singapore MOE Primary 1 and Primary 2 spelling words.
